iPhone 3G s Review

iPhone review-
3Gs- not too inspiring, but cool enough to buy. I’m upgrading from my Motorola Q- which has been a work horse, but seriously lacking. I won’t bash or regret the change- let’s move forward.

I’ve had a mildly long relationship with iPhones via my clients. Initially it was just cool, but the impact of ownership sheds more light. Game changer. Not that I haven’t had good phones, iPods, PDAs etc., but to have it in one is super convenient. It isn’t the best, but I love it.

With my Q I constantly had space issues- no surfing… at all. 32GB is nice, still not what I need to have it be my carry-all. For me a good starting place would be the iPod classic starting point- 120GB minimum. With tons of music I can only sync a few playlists and have to be conscious about app room and video storage. Come on Apple, at least give me the option for expansion- even a microSDHC would’ve been nice. /Sigh. I’m trying not to gripe, but that may be the trend.

Camera- definately better than the previous, and certainly better than the old Q, but still just ok. I don’t expect much out of it and that way I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Great for taking snapshots of prices or deals I find while I’m out to show my wife. I’m very happy with the touch focus- that has been really nice. Score- 1 being Julia’s old Olympus 2mp and 10 being a solid DSLR, I give it a solid 5.

Video- super cool. The option to capture Abby’s silly moments is priceless. Well, priceless in that I didn’t have to remember to bring another cam. There was a pretty funny macbreak video on how to make it steady. It also uploads directly to Youtube, albeit a compressed version.

The compressed doesn’t qualify for the HQ tag. Still easy to get content up fast. I wish I had more ways to instantly upload to vimeo- heck I’d even think about paying for a plus account. Vimeo’s compression is better imo, and the site is just better. Now for the down side. The last 3/4 videos I’ve put up have been upside down or lacked sound! The HECK!?! I’ve been on the forums seeking staff help to right the wrong. I really love vimeo, I have faith!

iPod- pretty, but I sort of miss my clickwheel. I LOVE the clickwheel. The learning curve is easy, and the UI is nice, especially coverflow. Note- don’t leave shuffle on shake if you’re on a bicycle- super annoying. Not much to mention here.

App store- yayy! As much as I’ve licked my chops dreaming of the Palm Pre on Verizion, the developer offerings at the App store is HUGE! I’m not downloading a ton, just a few that make me more active in my online world. Twitter- thinking about getting tweetie, Facebook- updates/cyber stalking nice to have access to. A few games- Paper toss is slick and I’ve been pondering Peggle. I don’t like Peggle’s $5 price tag- for me $3 would’ve been better. Mega Man 2 Lite is annoying not having real buttons! Shazam is super cool to tag songs you don’t know- and free is fantastic!

Why is it that my posts have become text walls? I saw a post reply once that was “HOLY FREAKING WALL OF TEXT,” now that is constantly in the back of my mind. Maybe someone will get something from it. Sorry, back to my “review.”

Long story short, I REALLY enjoy the iPhone. I’m just not a fanboy. I feel like this was rushed out to squash the Pre launch. This wasn’t an Oh, and one more thing moment. Maybe an “Oh yeah, we made a few upgrades and it is faster- enjoy.” Nothing to OOOOH and AHHHH about- nothing to call people about. Certainly not :@! It isn’t as bad as windows ME, but come on Apple- you should know better than to hit the market with a mildly upgraded money grab. Thanks, but I can’t /highfive until I’m really impressed.

Wish list:

Fresh new form factor
Matte finish or fix the fingerprint issues
OLED screen
MORE SPACE
5MP camera
IR receiver- nice to use my Apple remote!
FLASH SUPPORT- COME ON!?!
